“ALAS (Avance Latinx Academico Society) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity incorporated to “advocate for the Academic Advancement of the Spanish speaking English language learner and Spanish language retention or acquisition in kindergarten through sixth grade”. Likewise, ALAS serves as the Advisory Board to Escuela SMART Academy, a TPS magnet school located at 617 Western Avenue. Escuela SMART Academy, a TPS magnet school, k-6th grade, opened its doors.
Already with an enrollment of approximately 300 students, and including a pre-school at the site, Escuela SMART Academy welcomes parents of Spanish speaking, English language learners and promotes Spanish language skills to all its students. Any donations will be purposed by ALAS towards after school and summer academic programming, contributing to the Scholarship Fund established for Escuela SMART Academy alumnus, as well as, sustaining ALAS’ operations, programming and other priorities (eg, transportation for students living within a mile of the school).
