The goal of this fund is to obtain an Ohio Historical Marker for Scott High School by the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year in honor of the upcoming 175th anniversary of Toledo Public Schools.
Toledo Public Schools Historian, Robyn Hage, has successfully researched, written, and fundraised for several markers throughout the Toledo area. Her long-term objective over the next three years is to have markers erected at Scott High School, Waite High School, and Harvard Elementary. All three of these schools are architecturally significant and the last of the original TPS schools. They were preserved from being torn down and rebuilt due to the Historical Architectural committee that was formed in 2002 before the Building for Success program began.
Why Scott High School?
Scott High School has been the focal point of the Old West End community since 1913. Millions of dollars were spent to upgrade the school for the needs of the 21st century learner, yet still retain the original design and craftsmanship. The bell outside the Collingwood entrance is from the old Toledo High School that was first built in 1853. There are so many connections to local history that could be applied with greater knowledge of how and why Scott High School came to be created. We also have a Toledo History class that is offered through Distance Learning and this could become a component of that class. It is currently taught by Joe Boyle.
